This inexpensive T-shirt dress may be my favorite purchase of the entire summer. It's unbelievably comfortable and crazy versatile, which means I basically wore it all over Europe, remixing with various items from my suitcase (a few different scarves and a change of shoes goes a long way). And apparently I'm still not tired of it. Because after being home for a day (just enough time to remove it from my suitcase and throw it in the washer), here I am wearing it again, mixed simply with a denim jacket, infinity scarf, and booties. And since 'tis the season of the transitional outfit, I'm already thinking about how perfectly this dress will go from warm weather to cool. I'm having visions of pairing it with tights, a sweater, and knee high boots, or with warm cardigans, fall jackets, and chunky knit scarves. A girl can dream, right? And this girl prefers to dream about wearing the same dress over and over (and over).

Oh, this chevron dress.  It's been my favorite thing to remix ever since I bought it (examples here, here, here, here, and oh yeah, here too), but it was recently out of commission for a little while after having a run in with the dryer.  Specifically, one of the straps got caught up in the lint trap and ripped apart. (This seems to be happening quite a bit lately with my strappy stuff - anyone else have a dryer that eats their clothes?) Anyway, after pouting about it for a few weeks, I finally sat down at the sewing machine and Frankenstein'ed the strap back together.  It's not perfect, but with a nice denim vest thrown over, no one is the wiser (except for when I blurt it out all over the internet, of course).

Next on the list of items I ruined -- this vest.  I washed it for the first time, and it came out with white spots on the back, even though my washing machine hasn't seen bleach in months.  If this post has taught us anything, it's that I clearly can't be trusted doing simple household chores.  Anyone who's better at doing laundry have any suggestions for how to remove them?

I took these photos back around the end of March, when it was pretty chilly with temperatures in the 30s, and was worried that they'd seem out of place if I posted them now -- but oh, hey, look, it's 34° today!  Suddenly this outfit is entirely appropriate, which does nothing to console nor deter me from having a mini-temper tantrum because it feels like winter just. won't. end.

She Bangs

{ON tee | f21 shorts | target sneakers | vintage kerchief | gifted necklace (similar), earrings (similar), bracelets}

This right here is an example of my "Oh my god it's so hot outside I can't stand to wear clothing but I really want to get fast food so I need to leave the house and I'll probably be arrested if I wear nothing, so fine I'll just put something on" kind of outfit.  At first I found myself reaching for a maxi dress for this muggy, 90 degree weather, but quickly remembered that I've already made that mistake once before.  I'm no genius, but I know better than to do the same thing twice and expect a different result.  The only exception: me circa 1989. The repeat offender?  Huge, teased bangs.  The result?  Never very flattering. But boy, I wasn't going to let that stop me from trying.  (Thank goodness I wasn't a teenager then, or things really might have gotten out of control.)

Extraneous Additions

{ON vest (similar), tee, shorts | target shoes (similar) | fossil watch | gifted necklace, earrings (similar), bracelets}

Whenever it's summer, there usually comes a point when I'm thankful for the days cool enough to wear layers.  Don't get me wrong - summer is my favorite and I kind of love hot days, but I think we can all agree that being creative with a tank, shorts, and sandals can only go so far when it's 93 degrees outside.  So when it's a cool 70, I feel really grateful for the chance to gussy up my outfit with some extraneous item of clothingOver the weekend I took advantage of the 75 degree day to add a totally non-essential vest to my ensemble.  Cool-hot days and unnecessary accoutrements; it's the little things that make me happy.

One of My Brighter Moments

{sears dress (cute option) | whoop tee shirt | qupid sandals (similar) | gifted necklace (similar) | c/o oasap ring}

These 90 degree days we've been having over the past week are really making it feel like summer.  However, this is precisely what not to wear on those kinds of days.  The dress was way too long, blocking the nonexistent breezes I kept hoping for, and trapping the heat in.  The tee shirt, while wonderful at reflecting light, also had a blanket-like effect and turned my own body against me by preventing its heat from escaping.

Before you go thinking I'm a complete dummy for wearing this on such a hot day, I had worn this outfit a week ago when it was cooler, and I only put it on again to get some photos.  However, choosing to photograph this outfit on a hot, humid, sunny day, walking in the heat to this location, and standing around sweating in places I didn't even know could sweat for 15 minutes, was apparently totally within my realm of good decisions.  So, scratch that first sentence.  It may not have been my brightest moment.

Nifty Knits

{marshalls dress (similar 1, 2) | ON vest, giveaway win from City & Burbs | target belt | steve madden boots | asos socks | oasap ring, c/o (similar) | diy scarf (similar)}

You guys, I can't help myself.  I can't stop wearing big, cowly, chunky knit infinity scarves.  Don't believe me?  Proof here, here, here, here, and oh yeah, here.  Though my time in Florida did give me a forced reprieve from wearing the thick, cozy things, I'm pretty sure spending two weeks apart from them only served to transform what was previously a mild fixation to a full fledged can't-leave-the-house-without-one, it's my grown-up-security-blanket type obsession.

So...to whichever genius pioneered the idea to take an ordinary winter scarf, and ingeniously connect the ends to turn it into a circular shape that could be loosely wrapped around the neck in the chicest way imaginable, well sir or madam, my hat's off to you (and then promptly back on again because, damn, it's getting cold!).

Oh, Northeast, your weather be crazy

{target jeans & cardi (similar)  |  ON chambray  |  hand me down vest  |  gramma's vintage kercheif  |  payless shoes (similar)  |  sprout watch}

It's tough to concentrate on writing about my outfit when I'm right in the blustery belly of a Frankenstorm.  Normally I wouldn't be stressed out by some totally random, completely out of the ordinary, unseasonably strange, autumn hurricane in NJ, but this year I'm actually scheduled to go on vacation during it.  So between gathering gallons of emergency water, stocking the house with bagels and canned soup, and listening to the walls shake with the wind, we're also packing and preparing for our flight while simultaneously staying glued to both the weather channel and Delta's website,  hoping that the storm will have passed by the time our (surprisingly still on-time) flight is scheduled to fly tomorrow afternoon.

...And I thought last year's Halloween was bad...

(Just a little p.s. - I obviously didn't wear this today because it's way too dangerous to go outside.  Luckily I got dressed a few days ago which is more than I can say for today.  If you're also in the hurricane's path, I strongly urge you to stay inside as well.  Ok, public service announcement officially over.)

Knitting Pretty

{target sweater (similar) & chambray  |  f21 shorts  |  report boots (crazy similar)  |  anjolee ring, c/o  |  diy cowl (similar)}

I know I just explained how I'm ok with constant repetition, so let's just never mind the fact that I'm wearing chambray again.  Or the fact that I'm wearing shorts with tights again.  I'm more excited about this infinity scarf that I knit.  Yeah, that one.  Up there.  The one that looks all profesh and store bought and stuff.  I've been knitting for years, but normally my finished items don't come out exactly like I've pictured them in my head (I believe this is called your-imagination-knits-better-than-you-do-in-real-life syndrome).  But this time it came out exactly like I wanted.  It only took three balls of yarn, one week of almost non-stop knitting, and a surprisingly small amount of swearing.  This scarf is my new favorite everything.  So please give her a warm welcome because you'll be seeing lots more of this cozy little cowl in the months to come.
