Please pardon my utter lack of posts this last little while. An especially nasty cold took me out of commission for over a week. Basically all I could do for days was lie on the couch and watch TV, and even that was pushing it. I still have it, but I'm finally beyond the stage where forming coherent thoughts isn't a chore. And even though I've lost my voice, I am happy to report that I can still speak as much as I like as long as I type it onto a screen (or whisper to people, which isn't awkward at all).

This little number was my outfit of choice for a date with a friend at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC two weeks ago. I knew we'd be doing a lot of walking, so I tested these shoes out to ensure they'd be nice and comfy while strolling for miles around the museum and city. They passed the comfort test at home, only to completely and thoroughly disappoint me once out in the field. Luckily my friend was patient each and every time I made a pit stop to add a band aid to a sore spot, or to complain about the woes of being a woman who cares about trivial things like cute shoes, all while looking longingly at his size twelves and wishing - just for a fleeting moment - that my feet were big enough to borrow his sneakers.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  Life is just better when you put a bird on it.  And this blouse is no exception.  For a good, long while the extent of my obsession with birds was limited to swallows, sparrows, and other songbirds.  I'm only partially ashamed to admit that not too long ago, I constantly put birds on things, but limited it to sparrows, swallows, and similarly small, adorable ones (if only you could see my bird-adorned hoodie, the plush birds nestled in my house plants, the Christmas ornaments I sewed, various necklaces featuring our feathered friends, and oh yeah, the handmade mobile hanging by my bed).  But then I received this flamingo print top* from my lovely sponsor, dxmall, and I am now proud to say I welcome birds of all types to adorn my attire.  I mean, what a waste of time thinking flamingos (used for decorative purposes of course) were simply neon pink, plastic kitsch accompanied almost exclusively by astroturf.  Thanks to the truly beautiful print on this top, I now see that they can be pretty, understated, sophisticated even.  I can only imagine what will come next.  Seabirds?  Arctic birds?  Tropical birds?  The possibilities are wide open!

*a note about the top: contrary to the blazer I received from dxmall, this top seems to run large.  I'm wearing a size medium, but probably could have done with a small.

That time I looked like Zooey Deschanel

{top, jacket: target  //  jeans  //  shoes: spring, similar  //  bracelets: f21, similar #1, #2  //  scarf: diy}

Yesterday I finally went to renew my license at the DMV.  I was expecting the usual - waiting, annoyance, waiting, getting frustrated, and waiting.  So imagine my surprise when after waiting only 45 minutes (which to be honest, did kind of feel like an eternity because I forgot to bring a book and there's only so long I can amuse myself counting mullets), I got to the desk and both the girl taking my photo and the guy next to her told me I look like Zooey Deschanel.
This is especially cool because she's sort of  my girl crush and the only celebrity that I actually do want to look like.
{Personally, I don't really see it.  But if putting big waves in my hair (which I will then come home, try to "fix", wind up ruining, and salvage by putting my hair up before leaving the house again), winging out my eyeliner, and using red lip stain does the trick, then I'll take it.}
I tried to play it cool, as if I get that all the time.  But I think my response went something more like:
"Oh my God!  Thank you!" (Awkwardly give the guy a high five). "That's the nicest thing I've heard all day!  Awesome!  Thanks!"
Smooooth....

By the way, somewhere in here they saw Zooey.
(Now that I've been compared to her, I feel we should be on a first name basis.)

Come party with me today here.

Hard to Hear

{top, jacket: target  //  jeans: gap  //  boots: old navy  //  belt: delias  //  watch: sprout  //  bangle: f21}

I struggled writing this post today.  My boyfriend and I got some terrible news over the weekend and  I wasn't sure if I should share it here, or just go on as if everything is ok.
But pretending that bad things don't happen is not real life.  Everything is not always ok.  And acting happy when I'm not has never been my forte.  (These photos were taken before we got the news).

We found out on Saturday that my boyfriend's sister has a brain tumor.

We are devastated.
What's worse is that she and the rest of my boyfriend's family live in Switzerland, so we can't be there to visit her, speak with the doctors, or take comfort with his family.  We just have to wait for news.
Her doctors think it's operable.  They're still running tests.  But they're being cautious because she's pregnant.
We are trying to be hopeful.
We find out today if and when the doctors will operate.
But for now all we can do is wait, hope, and have faith that Sarah will pull through.
