Oh, deer indeed. It's been....well, I don't even actually know how long it's been since I've done an outfit post. I blame it on the winter (too cold!) and the holidays (busy busy busy), but mostly it's just the fact that I've been fortunate enough to take 4 vacations in the last 4 months*. SO much on that coming soon.

I wore this around Christmastime, which explains the giant reindeer on my shirt. Though truth be told, I'd rock this reindeer any time of year. Inspired by Megan, who I featured in the Favorite Fashion Friday link-up back in December, I decided to fancy up my reindeer a little bit with a blazer, too. I must admit, though, Megan's outfit, with her camel-colored blazer and bright scarf, just pops way more than my version. Camel and reindeer get along splendidly. Who would have thought?

*This is what happens when you don't go anywhere all year and then have to use up all the vacation days before January comes around. It's kind of surreal to travel someplace new every month...I recommend it.

___________________________

Given that most of the country is already in the midst of winter weather (NJ included!), I realize that photos of me wearing just a sweater and a denim jacket look preposterous. I agree. But I took these before Thanksgiving, when it was actually still fall during fall (and not this winter-during-fall we're currently experiencing). And good thing, because almost right on cue, I got sick as soon as I got back home. And I'm pretty sure standing outside in the snow without a coat taking outfit photos is not what you'd call a formula for getting well soon.

Luckily, I have this cozy Callanan Trooper hat lined with fleece and faux fur to keep me warm. It looked good when I wore it with my jean jacket the other day, but right now it looks especially chic paired with my pajamas and ever-present box of tissues.

I'm pretty sure every year around this time I start complaining about how the cold weather and end of daylight savings make taking good outfit photos just that much harder. So this year I'll spare you the spiel, and just say that I didn't take any outfit photos this week or last. But I found these ones from back in April that I never posted for some reason, and figured that what I wore when it was chilly then looks kind of like something I'd wear when it's chilly now. And my guess is that if I didn't tell you these were from over half a year ago, you probably wouldn't have guessed it, anyway. I'm tricky like that.

One Dress, Two Ways

One of my favorite parts about getting dressed is remixing the clothes I already have. I find the challenge of coming up with new ways to wear the same things really rewarding; it sparks my creativity and forces me to try new combinations that I otherwise might not have thought of. Plus, it's pretty easy on the wallet, too. I'm proud to say that since I started this blog over three years ago, I've only repeated outfits a handful of times (it's usually when I wear something and don't document it for the blog, so I feel entitled to wear it again. I'm a crazy person, right?).

Anyway.

I hadn't worn this dress in over a year, and never in cooler weather, so I decided to take her out for a spin and remix her two different ways for fall. In this first outfit, my legs stayed nice and warm with the help of my kushyfoot tights. I love their opacity and texture, but I have to admit that when I realized they were control top I was totally turned off. I loathe control top. But  miracle of miracles, they didn't squeeze the life out of me. I can honestly say that this is the first pair of control-top tights I've worn that are actually comfortable. Pain-free control top tights exist.  Who knew?

I love how a simple change of jacket and shoes can transform an outfit into something entirely different. I wore this back when it was still slightly warm enough for bare legs. But even so, I wore fleece-lined trouser socks with my boots, and I was cozy all the way up to my shins. These babies will really come in handy during winter. A lot of my boots require thin socks, which usually leave my feet freezing cold. This pair is thin yet still cozy and fleecey. I don't even know how that's possible, but I'm so glad I found them.

The sweet people at kushyfoot also sent me a pair of emergency flats like such:

I brought these on my recent vacation to Las Vegas, and they were an absolute lifesaver. Or for the less dramatic, a foot-&-toe-saver. If you've ever been, then you know that there is a lot of walking to do, yet high heels look very nice at the club. I have no shame carrying my heels with me all the way from the hotel to the bouncer, awkwardly putting them on while standing in line to get in. Then folded up and into my clutch the flats go, to be taken out again when it's time to stumble on home.  #Classy.

The Repeater

booties: c/o chicwish | really similar
ring: street artist in Brooklyn | lookalike
scarf: DIY from vintage kercheifs

______________________________

This inexpensive T-shirt dress may be my favorite purchase of the entire summer. It's unbelievably comfortable and crazy versatile, which means I basically wore it all over Europe, remixing with various items from my suitcase (a few different scarves and a change of shoes goes a long way). And apparently I'm still not tired of it. Because after being home for a day (just enough time to remove it from my suitcase and throw it in the washer), here I am wearing it again, mixed simply with a denim jacket, infinity scarf, and booties. And since 'tis the season of the transitional outfit, I'm already thinking about how perfectly this dress will go from warm weather to cool. I'm having visions of pairing it with tights, a sweater, and knee high boots, or with warm cardigans, fall jackets, and chunky knit scarves. A girl can dream, right? And this girl prefers to dream about wearing the same dress over and over (and over).

________________________________

Please pardon my utter lack of posts this last little while. An especially nasty cold took me out of commission for over a week. Basically all I could do for days was lie on the couch and watch TV, and even that was pushing it. I still have it, but I'm finally beyond the stage where forming coherent thoughts isn't a chore. And even though I've lost my voice, I am happy to report that I can still speak as much as I like as long as I type it onto a screen (or whisper to people, which isn't awkward at all).

This little number was my outfit of choice for a date with a friend at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC two weeks ago. I knew we'd be doing a lot of walking, so I tested these shoes out to ensure they'd be nice and comfy while strolling for miles around the museum and city. They passed the comfort test at home, only to completely and thoroughly disappoint me once out in the field. Luckily my friend was patient each and every time I made a pit stop to add a band aid to a sore spot, or to complain about the woes of being a woman who cares about trivial things like cute shoes, all while looking longingly at his size twelves and wishing - just for a fleeting moment - that my feet were big enough to borrow his sneakers.

This kind of outfit is quickly becoming my standard summer uniform: sheer neutral top, shorts, booties - what's not to love? I had plans to meet friends at a beer garden this weekend* and surprise, settled on a slightly varied version of this outfit I just wore. Please, try not to be blown away by my boundless creativity. Except this time, I put the sweater on and realized it was waaaay too sheer. So I grabbed this bandeau that I DIY'ed (and by DIY I mean I cut the top off a pair of old leggings and sewed one side so it was tight enough to stay on) to cover up a bit. I looked in the mirror and thought censor bar - you know the kind that appears over, well, things just of this nature. How literally apropos. I'm pretty sure the generously inebriated patrons of the bar got what I was going for there.

*We went to Studio Square Beer Garden in Long Island City, NY - if you're ever in the area, do yourself a favor and stop by - it's one of the best beer gardens I've visited. Also worth mentioning is that later on we wound up at a club called Output in Brooklyn, which is another fine establishment with face-melting beats and a nice rooftop lounge, worthy of a visit anytime you feel like dancing your ass off until 6am.

Goldilocks

purse: target | cute option 1, 2

These shorts.  These perfectly fitting, not-too-tight, not-too-loose, totally comfy, just-the-right-color, perfectly shredded & destroyed shorts.  It's not often that I buy denim of any kind, because it's not the easiest task finding just the right pair that both looks and feels good.  Plus I'm lazy and usually give up after trying on a few flops.  So when I find that perfect pair, it is always a cause for small celebration.  Or a glass of champagne at least (I'll take any excuse).  And these shorts, my friends, are the Goldilocks of shorts.  They are juuuust right.

If you're inclined to snag a pair for yourself, I'd advise you to hurry because they are going fast.  It looks like this wash is already sold out online (always a chance they're still in stores, though), and the darker wash seems pretty close to the same fate.

Joining the party.

This is a little belated (does two weeks still count as just a little belated?), but I wanted to share with you the outfit that I wore for my birthday.  It was a warm, sunny day that turned into a crisp cool evening - perfect for hanging around the fire pit, sharing good conversation, having lots of laughs, and roasting a few peeps.  Yes, fire roasted peeps. It's just one of the many splendors of throwing a birthday party the day before Easter. People bring candy which lends itself quite well to being impaled upon sticks and thrust into flame.  And fyi, they're pretty damn delicious.  Who knew?
